This manual describes a moderate-intensity group-based approach to adolescent outpatient substance abuse treatment, implemented by the Epoch Counseling Center, Baltimore County, Maryland. The Group-Based Outpatient Treatment for Adolescent Substance Abuse program combines a 20-week group counseling intervention with individual and family therapy and is designed to address the issues and problems commonly facing adolescent substance abusers (ages 14 to 18). The Epoch Counseling Center adolescent treatment program has its foundations in social learning theory and conditioning theory, which when integrated help explain how substance use behaviors are learned and subsequently unlearned. The manual includes information on the following topics:
- Theoretical orientation
- Overview of the group-based treatment
- Relapse prevention curricula
- Special issues regarding implementation
- Organizational overview
- Drug education curricula
- Parent education and support group curricula
- The evaluation project
