Medicaid: A Lifeline at Risk: Faith’s Struggle for Healthcare in the Face of Medicaid Cuts

Faith Granberry, Cahokia, IL, works full time but doesn't make enough money to cover healthcare expenses.

She relied on Medicaid in foster care. She now worries that Medicaid cuts would affect her ability to afford healthcare.

"Medical debt is a big reason people become homeless in America," she said. It's a realistic fear for her as she has experienced homelessness before.

Without Medicaid coverage, Faith would be forced to forgo her counselor appointments at Chestnut that have been critical in keeping her grounded.

"I'd feel lost without someone to talk to," she said. Requiring a root canal and wisdom teeth removal, she is also concerned about dental care.

Another worry is her adopted father, who has a schizophrenia diagnosis and is unable to work. He is currently navigating the difficult process of obtaining disability insurance and relies on Faith's grandmother for financial assistance.

Medicaid cuts would be devastating to anyone already struggling, according to Faith.

"People work hard, they have multiple jobs to take care of family, they skip lunch and dinner -- they rely on Medicaid to help them save up for better resources to help themselves"
