Federally Qualified Health Center
Federally Qualified Health Center
Chesnut Family Health Centers are designated as Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC). An FQHC is a community health clinic that provides medical, dental, and behavioral health care to people, no matter how much money they make. FQHCs are funded by the federal government (Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Health Center Program) to help people who might not have health insurance or who live in areas where there aren’t many doctors.
What Makes an FQHC Special?
- Affordable Care: We charge patients based on how much money they make (discounted fees), so people with low incomes can afford care.
- All-in-One Services: We offer check-ups, vaccinations, dental care, behavioral health services, and pharmacy services in one place.
- Community Focused: We are in neighborhoods that need more healthcare options and are run by a board of people, including patients, who help make decisions.
- Open to Everyone: While we accept insurance, you don’t need insurance, and we won’t turn anyone away if they can’t pay.
Why Do FQHCs Exist?
FQHCs were created to make sure everyone, no matter where they live or how much money they have, can see a doctor and stay healthy. They help prevent sickness, treat illnesses, and keep communities strong.
You can learn more about FQHCs on the HRSA website.
The defining legislation for FQHCs is Section 1905(l)(2)(B) of the Social Security Act.
