Brewing a Second Chance: Mike Roper's Story
Before entering Problem-Solving Court (often referred to as Drug Court), Mike Roper described his life in two words: chaotic and nonproductive. As a DJ working in clubs and bars, drugs were readily available, and one bad choice quickly became a lifestyle. But after several run-ins with the law, he was given a choice: seven to eight years in prison or Drug Court. Finally hitting rock bottom, Mike chose the path to recovery through Drug Court.
Drug Court supports individuals charged with non-violent offenses by helping them address substance use disorders and reduce the risk of future incarcerations. Instead of focusing on punishment, they participate in rehabilitation. Mike found himself in a men’s group at Chestnut Health Systems™. Hearing the stories of others helped him feel less alone. “People from all walks of life—educators, legal workers, everyone—struggling with the same issues,” said Mike. “That surprised me.”
With a strong support system, Mike faced recovery head-on. “My family believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself,” Mike said. “That pushed me to change and become a good person.” He also learned that setting boundaries with those who were negatively impacting his life was the best approach to healing.
While restructuring his life, Mike’s perspective on purpose changed. Before, he had tunnel-vision on the party lifestyle and missed out on important moments. But through recovery, he started spending more time with family and in the community. “I’m involved in things I never knew existed.”
Today, Mike owns two printing businesses, a lawn care business, and a coffee shop—Downtown WestEnd & Courtyard—in Wood River. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset. Watching my dad struggle when his plant shut down in his 40s inspired me to diversify my work.”
On November 13, Mike’s coffee shop trailer debuted at Chestnut’s Wood River location’s Open House. While looking at Chestnut’s sign, the full circle moment hit him. “It was awesome to see,” Mike said. “That day, seeing Chestnut reminded me of the people who helped shape my recovery and who I am today.”
Now, 13 years in recovery, Mike recommends programs such as Drug Court to those in need. “It’s the best decision you can make. Life has so much more to offer. Some guys in Drug Court didn’t make it. Some ended up in prison or died. I share my story to show that resources are out there, and you don’t have to wait until it’s too late.”
