For many people, going to the dentist is something they've put off for years, but for Dr. Anne Koehne (Dr. Annie), helping patients take the first step back into the dental chair is one of the most meaningful parts of her work.

Dr. Annie joined Chestnut Health Systems™ in August 2023 as the first general dentist for Chestnut Family Dental. Since then, Dr. Annie has focused on creating a different kind of dental experience for her patients; one rooted in patience, listening, and empathy.

"Just making an appointment and walking through the door is a huge step for a lot of patients," she said. "I think it's an honor and a privilege to be a part of their journey, no matter how long or short it ends up being."

Finding the First Step

As a recent dental school graduate, Dr. Annie knew her first role would shape the kind of provider she'd become.

"I was really looking for an environment that was supportive and conducive for growth," she said. "When I walked into Chestnut for the first time, I learned about their mission and values, and I loved it."

What stood out the most was the culture built to support both patients and employees. That foundation of support and commitment has helped Dr. Annie to confidently navigate the transition from dental school into professional practice, knowing she's backed by a team that values continuous learning and collaboration.

Leading with Empathy

Dr. Annie believes some of the most important tools in dentistry are not found in a tray, but in her actions and words. She listens to her patients and observes their body language.

"Sometimes, it's not what people say, but it's how they show what they're feeling," said Dr. Annie. "Being at the dentist is scary, so I think leading every appointment and situation with empathy and understanding is important."

In her work, Dr. Annie aims to do more listening than talking. While education is a key piece of treatment, she's intentional about engaging her patients in their care. She includes them in conversations with her team and leaves space for the patient to express their needs and wants.

Working as One Team

Dr. Annie's day is typically structured the same way with built-in time for administrative tasks, followed by a team huddle every morning to ensure communication and alignment across the team. From there, Dr. Annie and her team see patients of all ages, both scheduled and walk-ins as the schedule allows.

"There's a big push for a team approach rather than individual tasks," said Dr. Annie. "We do a lot of things as a united front to give our patients the best care possible."

Learning Beyond the Operatory

What makes Chestnut unique, she explains, is the ability to collaborate with other healthcare professionals beyond dentistry. As part of Chestnut's integrated care model, Dr. Annie and her team regularly collaborate with other physicians, medical assistants, nurses, and mental health professionals across Chestnut to ensure every need is met for their patients.

"That collaboration is something you don't find everywhere," she said. "If something is out of my scope, there's always someone I can turn to for guidance or to learn from."

Dr. Annie decided to pursue advanced training through the American Dental Association's Certified Clinic Director (CCD) Program. CCD is a national program focusing on leadership development, communication, and effective clinic operations to support both patient care and team success.

She completed the program in March 2026, becoming one of the first 50 dentists nationwide to earn the certification.

"In the healthcare field, you've dedicated your life to learning," Dr. Annie said. "Chestnut really supports that mindset. Whether you want to learn more about leadership and development or go to a conference, they are supportive and encourage that growth on both a personal and professional level."

Changing the Narrative

For Dr. Annie, success if often measured in moments that feel small but carry significant meaning.

"When I have a patient come in who didn't want to make an appointment in the first place come back, that's huge," she said. "Seeing people walk out of the office with smiles instead of tears is what keeps me moving and grooving in the morning."

These small moments are rebuilding trust in dental care, opening up conversations, and allowing people to feel confident in their smile again.

Take the Chance

For anyone considering a career at Chestnut, Dr. Annie has simple advice: take the chance.

"Come for the interview. See the facilities. Meet the people," she said. "There's so much more to Chestnut than what fits in a job description."
