MACOUPIN COUNTY, IL / MADISON COUNTY, IL / MONTGOMERY COUNTY, IL / ST. CLAIR COUNTY, IL —Chestnut Health Systems™ is recognizing Problem Gambling Awareness Month this March by highlighting the importance of prevention, early identification, education and access to integrated support. Chestnut provides specialized counseling and recovery services for individuals experiencing problem gambling or co-occurring behavioral health concerns.

Observed annually, Problem Gambling Awareness Month aims to increase public understanding of problem gambling as a serious but often overlooked behavioral health issue. Gambling-related problems can affect mental health, relationships, finances, and overall well-being, yet many individuals do not seek help due to stigma or lack of awareness.

In Illinois, 383,000 adults are living with problem gambling, and an additional 761,000 are considered at risk. Warning signs may include difficulty controlling gambling behaviors, financial stress, relationship conflict, anxiety, depression, or using gambling to cope with emotional distress. Education and early support play a critical role in preventing long-term harm.

"Problem Gambling Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to shine a light on an issue that often stays hidden," said Emma Bowen, community health specialist at Chestnut. "By raising awareness, encouraging early conversations, and connecting people with support, we can reduce harm and help our community thrive. Recovery is possible, and no one has to face this journey alone."

Problem gambling frequently appears alongside other behavioral health conditions. Recognizing these connections early is essential for preventing long-term harm and ensuring people receive the correct level of care.

"Many people don't realize that problem gambling rarely exists on its own," said Nash Galvez, MHP, CRSS, CRADC, CODP-II, clinician, Chestnut. "We frequently see gambling concerns occurring alongside depression, anxiety, trauma or substance use. Through integrated counseling, we help people understand the roots of their gambling behaviors and support them in addressing all of their healthcare needs—not just one piece of the puzzle."

Throughout March, Chestnut encourages community members to learn about the risks of problem gambling, understanding warning signs, start conversations, and access resources that promote safer behaviors and recovery. Prevention strategies such as setting personal limits, avoiding gambling during times of stress and recognizing emotional triggers can reduce risk and support healthier decision-making.
