A Career Rooted in Purpose

For 27 years, Todd Smith has walked alongside individuals, couples, and families during some of the most difficult seasons of their lives.

As an individual, marriage, and family therapist at Chestnut Health Systems™, Todd didn’t choose this career by accident. He was drawn to the work for one simple but powerful reason: he wanted to make a difference. He wanted to heal people from their mental health concerns and create change, not just for individuals but for the community as a whole.

Expanding Impact

Over the years, that work has developed in meaningful ways. In addition to therapy, Todd facilitates domestic violence groups, teaching practical skills that help reduce aggression, and cycles of harm. "I love teaching, guiding, and supporting people to live their best lives,” he said.

A Day in the Life of a Therapist

No two days look exactly the same for Todd. Some days are filled with back-to-back sessions. Other days, he leads groups, attends meetings to collaborate with colleagues, or catches up on documentation and planning.

When asked to describe Chestnut's workplace culture, Todd uses three words: supportive, encouraging, and collaborative. Chestnut prioritizes growth by offering role-specific training and encouraging programs to work together. Management supports communication across teams so clients can benefit from coordinated care. That collaboration doesn’t just strengthen services; it strengthens relationships among staff.

Changed by the Work

This role has helped Todd become more confident—with himself, with clients, and colleagues. Mindfulness practices he integrates into his work have not only benefited his clients but have also positively impacted his own life.

A Place to Grow

When asked why so many staff stay at Chestnut for years, Todd doesn’t hesitate. “It’s the connection between your coworkers and clients,” he said. “You get a chance to see them grow and how your work makes an impact.”

That connection runs even deeper for Todd, as his daughter also works at Chestnut in the finance department. "I sent her job openings, and she found one that was a great fit for her.”

For anyone considering applying, Todd offers practical advice: ask questions, understand what’s expected, and be open to growth.

Because here, growth isn’t just something we offer clients—it’s something we live every day.
