An Unexpected Opportunity
Robert Royal has been with Chestnut Health Systems™ since 2021 as a counselor. For Robert, the work is deeply personal. Growing up around substance use, he understands the challenges clients face and is committed to helping them navigate recovery. “I want to help people help themselves,” he said.
From Internship to Career
What started as an internship to earn his clinical hours for a social work certificate, turned into a fulfilling career in Chestnut’s residential program which provides focused, round-the-clock recovery services.
“I applied for the internship but was offered a full-time residential position because of my experience,” said Robert. “Chestnut gave me the flexibility to work and get my hours in.”
Having previously worked at a school, Robert planned to go back after finishing his internship hours, but his experience at Chestnut changed that. “I was getting my hours during support groups while doing residential work. I really started to like it. When I completed my hours, I ended up staying.”
Working in Residential Care
A typical day in the residential unit is anything but predictable. From morning staff meetings to one-on-one sessions with clients, the environment is dynamic and fast-paced. Robert finds that collaboration with his coworkers makes the work easier, not only for himself but for the clients. “The teamwork here makes helping clients possible. Employees can ask questions and feel supported.”
Why Work Here?
When asked what advice he would give someone considering joining Chestnut, Robert doesn’t hesitate: “If you care about helping people, this is the place to be. It's a great start for those newer in their careers who want experience.”
