When Katie Baublitz decided to pursue a career in healthcare, she wasn't driven by a single defining moment. Instead, it was a desire to build a stable and meaningful career while proving something important to herself. 

"I had just become a new mom," Katie recalled. "I wanted to go to school, earn a certification, and turn that into a career." 

Inspired by family members and friends who had pursued similar paths, Katie saw medical assisting as an opportunity to create a future full of possibilities. She enrolled in a Medical Assistant program, where she completed 10 months of coursework followed by a two-month externship at what was then Illini Healthcare.  

Finding Her Way to Chestnut 

A close friend who worked as a medical assistant in Chestnut Health System's Granite City location let her know about an open position. Katie applied, interviewed, and soon found herself beginning what would become a decade-long career with the organization. 

Making a Difference as a Medical Assistant 

Medical assistants play a vital role in delivering quality patient care, and Katie quickly developed a passion for the work. 

On a typical day, medical assistants prepare patients for appointments by updating medical records, obtaining vitals, drawing labs, and ensuring providers have everything they need to deliver effective care. Beyond direct patient support, medical assistants also handle important administrative responsibilities. 

"Our medical assistants really set the providers up for success," said Katie. 

One area of her work that proved especially meaningful was supporting patients in Chestnut's medication-assisted recovery treatment program. Katie found fulfillment in walking alongside patients throughout their recovery journeys. 

"I really liked seeing patients go through the process," she said. "Watching them become stable on their medications, seeing their progress, and then sometimes even seeing them come back and work here. That's really rewarding." 

Growing Into a Leadership Role 

About five years ago, Chestnut's continued growth created a new opportunity for Katie. 

As services expanded, leadership identified a need for additional support, and Katie was encouraged to apply for the newly created medical assistant coordinator position.  

Today, her responsibilities have expanded far beyond patient care. 

As medical assistant coordinator, Katie oversees staff support and operations, making sure medical assistants have the resources they need to succeed. She conducts chart audits and quality checks, orders supplies, monitors equipment maintenance, and serves as a resource for her team whenever challenges arise. 

Building Confidence Along the Way 

When reflecting on her professional growth, Katie points to one quality that has made the biggest difference: confidence. 

Over the years, she has learned to trust her knowledge, experience, and decision-making abilities. 

"Before, I would always ask, 'Is this okay? Can I do this?'" Katie explained. "My supervisor would tell me, 'You know what you're doing.'" 

That encouragement helped her grow into a leader who is comfortable making decisions while continuing to learn and develop. 

A Workplace That Feels Like Family 

When asked what she enjoys most about working at Chestnut, Katie’s answer comes down to one thing: people. 

She credits her supervisors, coworkers, and staff for creating a supportive environment where ideas are welcomed and collaboration thrives. 

"I really love the people that I work with,” Katie said. “I’m able to talk and bounce ideas off my team." 

That strong sense of teamwork and support has kept Katie engaged and motivated throughout her 10 years with the organization.
