For many young adults, drinking or other substance use is a part of social life. But sometimes, it can start affecting your energy, mood, motivation, sleep, or relationships, and can be extra difficult for those who have been involved with the criminal-legal system.

The PEERS Study connects young adults (ages 18-26) with trained coaches who can help explore ways to make positive changes—without pressure or judgment.

Is This Study for You?

You may be eligible if you:
✔ Are between the ages of 18-26
✔ Have experienced struggles related to substance use in the past year
✔ Have current or past experience with the criminal legal system (including juvenile or adult probation, parole, diversion, or deflection programs)
✔ Are curious about how substance use may be impacting your life and want support in making positive changes

 

 

What to Expect

  • Work with a PEERS coach for up to 6 months: Your dedicated coach will meet with you weekly, in person, for approximately 60-minute sessions. Coaches may or may not have lived experience with the criminal legal system or substance use recovery.
  • 3 in-person visits to the Lighthouse Institute in downtown Eugene, OR over 6 months
  • Study activities may include completing confidential:
    • Interviews
    • Web-based surveys
    • Drug screens (via mouth swab or urine sample)
  • Compensation: Earn up to $175 for completing all study visits, including bonus payments for completing surveys and drug screens on time.
  • Your privacy is protected: All information shared is completely confidential, unless there is an emergency safety concern Your participation will NOT impact your probation, parole, or legal status.
